O’Sullivan is the anglicised form of Ó Súilleabháin (“son of the one-eyed man”); in Irish my surname is actually Ní Shúilleabháin, meaning “daughter of the one-eyed man”; only the male form was anglicised.
Emer, a figure from Celtic mythology, was noted for possessing six distinguished qualities traditionally described as the “gifts of womanhood”: beauty, a pleasant voice, eloquence, skill in needlework, wisdom and chastity.
